Each year CIEAM gathers its far-flung community to come together, network and compare notes on achievements for the preceding twelve months. The tradition has continued in 2011, with staff, participants and special guests of the centre congregating at Sheraton Noosa Resort for a three day symposium in the first week of November. The conference also incorporated the annual forum of the Australian Asset Management Collaborative Group (AAMCoG).

This year the conference trialled some new elements, including ‘speed presenting’ by post-graduates, who were required to give a three minute ‘elevator speech’ about their research to the audience. Each presentation was evaluated by the audience based on set criteria, and the three highest scoring presenters recognised with a cash prize from CIEAM. The presentations were very well received, with some delegates commenting that they were pleasantly surprised about the depth and breadth of research being undertaken within the centre.

The highest scoring presentation was that of FengFeng Li, who received a cash prize of $1,000. Second and third place getters were Craig Furneaux and Asti Mardiasmo who received $500 and $250 respectively. Congratulations, FengFeng, Craig and Asti!

Another highlight of the conference was the showcase of research outputs where our project teams had the opportunity to demonstrate and discuss in detail their research achievements. The exhibition was well attended and generated much interest in the commercial outputs that CIEAM is producing.

The conference culminated with the annual forum of the Australian Asset Management Collaborative Group (AAMCoG). The day kicked off with a keynote presentation by AAMCoG Chairman, Mr Des Pearson who also formally launched the Guide to Integrated Strategic Asset Management. The completion of the guide is a great achievement for both AAMCoG and CIEAM’s sustainability and organisational performance program team, who have been working together on the guide for some time. The keynote was followed with an overview of CIEAM public good projects, and an interactive forum on sustainable infrastructure development. Led by a panel of experts and facilitated by CIEAM Program Leader Prof Kerry Brown, the forum touched on many ‘hot’ issues, stimulating vigorous discussion, and could have continued longer than the conference schedule allowed.
